BetMGM Sportsbook NJ Promo Code 2020
Not long after the U.S. Supreme Court decision in May 2018 lifting the federal prohibition on sports betting outside of Nevada, MGM Resorts International quickly got into the game in New Jersey with its own BetMGM sportsbook app and website.
MGM joined forces with European-based gambling giant GVC Holdings to create a new joint venture called Roar Digital to power its online sportsbook. With the MGM-owned Borgata as a land-based partner, the online sportsbook was first launched in New Jersey under the brand PlayMGM in August 2018 before being refurbished and rebranded as BetMGM in September 2019.
The BetMGM online sportsbook is both versatile and user-friendly, combining a number of attractive features that make it a great choice for both recreational and serious sports bettors.
BetMGM Sportsbook NJ bonus offer – May 2020
An initial incentive to register for a BetMGM Sportsbook account is the generous welcome bonus, a risk-free bet worth up to $500. (Note: You can use this promotion just the same if your first wager is for $75, $304 or $499.) Take advantage by clicking the links on this page or using the bonus code in the table below.
BetMGM New Jersey Sportsbook 2020 bonus code and details
|BetMGM Sportsbook NJ Promo Code||BETNJ1|
|New Player Bonus||Up To $500 Risk-Free Bet|
|New Jersey Partner||Borgata|
|Online Since||August 2018|
How it works
The bonus is tied to your first wager on BetMGM. It’s called “risk-free,” and what that phrase means is if you win the bet you get to enjoy your winnings and there is no bonus to be had, but if you lose the bet you get the money back in the form of a bonus (or site credit).
For instance, let’s say you make your first deposit and then place a $500 moneyline bet on the Los Angeles Lakers to beat the Milwaukee Bucks. If the Lakers win, you receive your winnings as you normally would with any bet. However, if the Bucks lose, you get your $500 refunded to you as a bonus.
Those bonus bets will be credited to your account, and you can use them in the future by checking them in your bet slip, to indicate you want to use a bonus bet rather than cash funds in your account. After you place these bets, the bonus money will be moved into your regular account to be used however you wish. Note that you not get the stake back on the bonus bets — only the sums won.
It would be nice to have some sort of welcome bonus available regardless of whether you win that first bet or not. Even so, this is one of the larger risk-free welcome promotions we have encountered, and certainly makes BetMGM all the more inviting to try out.
BetMGM NJ software
BetMGM mobile app
The mobile app is free to download and available both for iOS and Android devices. Those with Androids need to go to the BetMGM site to download, while iOS users can get the app from the Apple store.
The app design is clear and functional. The familiar MGM black, white, and gold color scheme is pleasant if not terribly remarkable from an aesthetic standpoint. There’s a lot of text and not much in the way of graphics or extra frills, which keeps the focus squarely on finding and making bets.
Overall the app sports a “serious” or no-nonsense look that combined with its ease of use will be a positive for most. It is also an improvement over its earlier playMGM iteration, both in terms of appearance and usability.
Across the top of the BetMGM Sportsbook app’s opening screen you’ll find shortcuts to different sports, live betting, promotions, the BetMGM casino, and more. A scrolling banner highlights ongoing promotions and the day’s marquee matchups, with other popular games highlighted below. The bottom half of the opening screen again features short cuts to different markets and promotions.
As you click around and move through the various sections of the site, you’ll mostly retain a bottom row of buttons that include one that takes you back to the Home screen, a useful “A-Z Menu” that calls up all the different sports in alphabetical order, your “Betslip” where your current bets are collected, a link to “My Bets” showing your betting history, and another link to ongoing promotions.
The app is intuitively designed, meaning it’s always clear where you are at any moment and also evident how to get elsewhere you might want to go. In our experience with the app, the screens do sometimes take an extra beat or two to load, even over strong wi-fi, though that’s not a major inconvenience and the app is very stable (never crashing).
The “Betslip” works similar to other online sportsbooks. Choosing a wager brings the slip up from the bottom, allowing you to enter an amount. You can then either go ahead and place the bet or keep surfing to find other wagers to add to your slip. Then when you are ready to place your bets, click the Betslip button to see all your bets at once, and having confirmed them you can place them all with a single button click.
Within the different games you’ll find a lot of handy features to help you sort through betting options. You can isolate totals, spread bets, team and player props, or display all the available bets for a given contest in one long scrollable list.
The interface for following live bets is appealing as well, including an animated “gamecast” and links to show various statistics and other constantly updated information. For selected games there is also the capability to watch live streams.
The desktop or web-based version of the BetMGM Sportsbook has all the same features as the app, again forgoing extra flash and ornament in favor of accessibility.
All operates very similarly, with the added screen space making it possible to display more items in a standard three-column layout with a permanent menu across the top.
We really like the search feature, which is always present on the web-based platform although you need to scroll to the right to get to it on the app. Click the magnifying glass, type a team or player name, and you can instantly call up available bets and start placing them right away.
As with the BetMGM Sportsbook app, the web-based platform also makes it simple for users to jump over to the casino or poker rooms, if they are so inclined.
Deposits and withdrawals
There are lots of ways to deposit and withdraw funds to and from your account, all of which are available through both the app and the desktop web-version of the site.
The minimum deposit is $10. There are quite a few different methods to deposit available — more than most online sportsbooks. These include:
- PayPal – Link to your PayPal account, but you can only deposit using your PayPal balance and not a linked credit or debit card.
- VIP Preferred – Operates like ACH/e-Check and will have you provide driver’s license number, bank routing number, and account number for instant deposits.
- Skrill – One of the E-wallets and a quick method to get money in anonymously.
- Prepaid card (Play+) – These cards can be signed up for when you register an account. You can load them using any bank or card transfer.
- Direct bank transfer – This may be limited for some given that some banks do not accept payments into gambling sites, even legal sites.
- PayNearMe – A cash option that allows you to access 27,000 stores (including 7-Eleven’s throughout the country).
- Visa/MasterCard – Similar to a direct bank transfer, this could be limited based on the bank that you use.
- Casino cage – Deposits accepted at the casino cage of the Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa in Atlantic City. Proof of ID will be needed for this.
- American Express – One of the few sportsbooks to accept this, but fees may be charged by the card issuer.
There are fewer available options for withdrawing funds, although there are still plenty from which to choose, including
- Direct bank transfer
- BetMGM Online Play+
- Casino cage at Borgata
There is one drawback when it comes to depositing and withdrawing. Rather than being able to deposit and withdraw directly into the sportsbook, players have to do so via the BetMGM casino, then transfer money to and from their Sports Wallet. That adds a small bit of extra hassle when it comes to moving your money, although it isn’t much bother once you get the hang of it.
That said, through extensive usage at the BetMGM Sportsbook, our team has found that no sportsbook pays out withdrawals faster. Even after the Super Bowl, a withdrawal processed via PayPal in just 12 hours.
Betting lines at BetMGM NJ
Unfortunately when it comes to the pricing and betting options category, BetMGM sportsbook sometimes stands out quite unfavorably. The sportsbook is generally competitive with others in the NJ market on moneyline bets, point spreads, and totals.
But often BetMGM posts spread bets with outsized juice, anywhere from 21 cents to 30 cents when competitors are “dealing” 20. You may even discover oddities such as -134/+110 on an NFL spread game total when almost every other sportsbook is posting -110 both ways or even -105 both ways.
It’s flat-out bizarre, probably not something most recreational bettors would care about or notice, but worth examining before you place a wager. Those margins add up and we hope over time for its own and bettors’ sake, the BetMGM oddsmakers will install more regular pricing pattners.
On player props specifically, BetMGM is inexplicably bad at times, with a vig often around 30 or 40 cents total or greater.
For example – Al Horford points, on the same night:
- BetMGM: o11.5 -162, u11.5 +120 (42 cents)
- FanDuel Sportsbook: o12.5 -108; u12.5 -112 (20 cents)
- DraftKings Sportsbook: o11.5 -152, u11.5 +125 (27 cents)
The BetMGM Sportsbook features a standard selection of sports for bettors, including all of the most popular ones. A partial list:
- Aussie rules football
- Basketball (NBA, college, Europe)
- Football (NFL, college, XFL)
- Formula 1
- Rugby League
- Rugby Union
Within each sport there is a wide variety of betting options and types, including the usual single-game wagers (point spreads, moneylines, and totals), game and player prop bets, parlays, in-game (or “live”) betting, futures, and more.
Overall, the range of options is what you’ll find at most other shops. A partial list:
- Spread bets
- Totals (over/under)
- Live betting (in-game)
- Game props
- Player props
- Parlays and teasers
- “Cash out” feature
Generally, we have found that BetMGM does not offer as many player props as competing sportsbooks.
That said, one positive is all the other choices like “point bets” in which you pick a range of outcomes (e.g., Lakers win by 1-5, or 6-10, or 11-15, etc.), “race to” bets where you bet on which team reaches a particular score first, player props (called “player specials”) including lots of combinations (e.g., points + assists + rebounds and the like), and higher-risk “special bets” like whether or not a game will go into overtime or which period will feature the most goals.
Digging around uncovers some other fun, non-standard bets as well, such as “Tom Brady’s Next Team: Patriots Vs. Field” and the like.
“Price boosts” are occasionally offered to give users boosted odds on selected matchups.
The live betting options feature the same wide variety of bet types with the options constantly updated as games progress. There is an array of futures bets available with each sport as well, though perhaps not as wide a selection as found in other sportsbooks.
BetMGM NJ promotions
While we’re on the subject of promotions and bonuses, another positive of the BetMGM online sportsbook is the steady stream of promos and bonuses available to bettors. These are all worth checking regularly before placing any new wagers, as they apply to a variety of different betting types and scenarios.
While these offers are prominently displayed as banners when you first open the site, you can get to them in other ways as well. Find them on the app by tapping the “Promotions” tab in the lower right corner, while on the website you can get to them via a link on the right side of the permanent ruler bar. Most of these promotions require you to “opt in” first by clicking, then satisfy certain requirements in order to receive free bets or other bonuses.
Currently such offers include the “Money Monday Club” that gives users a $10 free bet to use in any game. The only requirement is to place at least $50 worth of qualifying wagers during the week.
Another fun one ongoing through the remainder of the NBA regular season is the Buffalo Wild Wings “Overtime Insurance” promotion. If you have opted into this one and place a pregame moneyline or spread bet on any Friday night NBA game, if your game goes into OT and you lose your bet, you can receive up to $25 in free bets.
The “Follow the Puck” promotion lasting throughout the NHL season is another promotion that gives users free bets that get larger the more that you wager on qualifying games. With this promotion you can earn as much as $100 in free bets to use on any game, and can claim the free bets as often as once per day (Tuesday through Saturday).
There are other similar promotions such as ones for placing your initial bet in a given sport, ones awarding free bets for making live in-game bets, promotions related to making parlay bets, and more.
As we say, these are well worth checking out whenever you log onto to place a wager, since they tend to cover a wide variety of wagers that many bettors might be making anyway, even without any promotion. The breadth of offers distinguish BetMGM online from many others that don’t feature such an array of bonuses or promotions.
BetMGM loyalty program in New Jersey
It’s worth pointing out that BetMGM online sportsbook is linked to the BetMGM Casino and BetMGM Poker apps — each is just a click away. Users of both the casino and poker room participate in a VIP program, BetMGM iRewards, which allows them to exchange points for comps, items in the iRewards store, special bonuses, and cash prizes.
The iRewards program is not available to sport bettors. However users can transfer cash prizes they earn in the program over to their Sports Wallet, thus providing another avenue for sports bettors to enjoy BetMGM-related perks.
Overall user experience at BetMGM
Finding games and bets is quite easy when clicking around the BetMGM Sportsbook, allowing users to fill out and submit betting slips with ease.
We also like how the sportsbook includes extra information in certain places to help users make better informed decisions when betting, such as making it easy to consult head-to-head records and recent matches or games. Even being able to see the potential payout amounts before making bets — not always the case for online sportsbooks — is a plus.
Nothing that is important is hidden or difficult to find, and it doesn’t take long at all for bettors to discover the sportsbook’s many useful features. Areas with numerous markets could be formatted more neatly or sorted better into menus, but this is nitpicking.
The help screens on the site and app provide responses to frequently asked questions, although some of those answers are lacking in detail. However you can keep clicking through (say “Yes” to more help) in order to reach 24-hour live chat support. You can get questions answered by phone (also 24-7) or via email as well.
MGM’s land-based sportsbook
MGM’s land-based New Jersey sportsbook is located the Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa in Atlantic City. The property has been open since 2003 and boasts a massive gaming space of 161,000 square feet.
When the sportsbook first opened at the Borgata in June 2018, it was housed inside the pre-existing Race Book, which became Borgata Race & Sports Book. It was quite an underwhelming temporary space. But about a year later in July 2019, MGM unveiled the The Moneyline Bar & Book — built at a cost of almost $12 million.
The Moneyline Bar & Book is 8,000-square-foot with a 40-foot wide LED video wall and six betting windows. There’s several high-top tables with self-charging stations, plush U-shaped booths, and banquet seating in the VIP lounge. The sportsbook’s bar offers a nice menu as well, with a selection of over 20 craft beers and specialty bar bites.
Overall, the casino is the top-grossing casino in Atlantic City and has seen significant renovations take place in 2005, 2007 and most recently in 2011. It’s played host to several movies, including The Bounty Hunter in 2010 and TV shows such as Impractical Jokers.
