Not only did the New Jersey online gambling industry grow by 25% in 2017, it also eclipsed its previous record for jackpot payouts in slots and table games.
During the year, lucky players racked up $3,634,482 in jackpot winnings over $75,000, as reported by the Division of Gaming Enforcement, shattering the 2016 total of $509,992 and topping the overall 2015 record of $3,588,785.

Frequent six-figure scores
Unlike in 2014 and 2015, when a pair of $1 million+ jackpots were responsible for the majority of total payouts, 2017 was the year of smaller, yet frequent and consistent jackpot hits.
In total, there were 29 recorded jackpot wins, the largest coming in August, when a Golden Nugget Casino player banked a $271,268 payday on the Divine Fortune jackpot slot.
Golden Nugget leads progressive payouts
Golden Nugget reported the most jackpot wins of any NJ online casino last year, not a surprise considering the licensee was the state’s top earner in 2017. The site accounted for $1,484,108 of all jackpot payouts, with Betfair and Borgata on its heels with just under $1 million each.
While players can potentially win large amounts on virtually any game, jackpot slots are the most likely to produce big, six-figure scores. Golden Nugget offers a total of four jackpot slot machines, but saw most of its hits come from the Divine Fortune progressive. The remaining wins were triggered by traditional slots like So Hot, Get Clucky and Jungle Spirit.

- Betfair: $959,196

- SugarHouse: $191,681
- Trop/Virgin: $154,019
- Party Poker: $80,000
Divine Fortune changes the game
Divine Fortune, a slick, ancient Greece-themed jackpot slot, made its debut in New Jersey in 2017, and has quickly become a favorite of online gamblers in the state. The game is not exclusive to one casino and is offered by a variety of operators, a fact which partly explains its frequent hits. While some casinos, like Borgata for example, offer over half a dozen jackpot slot options, others have so far only deployed Divine Fortune to their sites.
In its short history of operation the slot has produced more large online jackpot wins than any other slot or table game in the state’s history. In 2017, Divine Fortune registered nine payouts across three sites, dispensing a total of $1,322,288 to winners. The game is also available as a mobile app, which two Betfair players used last year to make six-figure scores.
The elusive Big Series $2.2 million+ progressive
While Divine Fortune has paid out consistently throughout the year, the Big Series jackpot, which currently sits at $2.2 million, has been far more difficult to crack. The network is comprised of several slots, including Biker Pigs, Going Nuts, Loot’EnKhamun, and Melon Madness, which are all offered at Borgata licensed sites.
The progressive was last hit back in 2015, and has since reached its current size due to being fed by not just Borgata players, but by playMGM and Party Casino patrons as well.
Traditional slots still boast big payout potential
Progressive slots, which take a fraction of every bet and add it to a community jackpot, can grow extremely large quite quickly. But that doesn’t mean big online casino wins don’t happen in traditional machines as well. In fact, non-jackpot slots were responsible for 13 big payouts last year totaling $1,564,955.
88 Fortunes is an example of a traditional slot offering static jackpots, which aren’t connected to any community network. Three lucky gamblers triggered game’s Grand jackpot in 2017, taking home $75,000 each.
Quick Hit Platinum also offers the chance to score big payday — up to 2,000X the total stake — when a specific array of special symbols appear. Last year, a Betfair Casino player pocketed $197,767 after a big win on the machine, with two players at Tropicana and Golden Nugget Casino banking $75,000 each during the year as well.
